He pressed a kiss to the back of Madelynn’s hand, then released it. Her heart thundered so loud, surely he could hear it. She should seize upon the chance he offered and ask him to leave.

But she was freaking tired of being the good girl all the time, the coward, too frightened to go for what she really wanted. If he left now, she might never see him again.

No. There was still the portrait to finish.

What if he only wanted sex? What if he got bored and tossed both her and the commission aside, tomorrow morning?

She didn’t care. For one night, she was done being the good girl. Coloring inside the lines was overrated.

“Well, darlin’?”

“Don’t go.” It was the barest whisper.

His eyes darkened to silver-shot gray. Her stomach lurched. She tilted her head back, ready with a snarky retort to the expected “knew you couldn’t resist the Wolf.” Instead, he closed the distance between them, his muscles rippling under the tawny skin. She started to scoot back, but he grabbed a corner of the sheet and held on when she tugged. And he actually smiled at her, not that crooked grin she knew so well, but a wolf’s smile, full of wicked intent. Madelynn could either engage in a tug-of-war for the sheet—and lose—or abandon it. She stayed where she was.

He cupped the back of her head and caught her lips with his. He kissed her, long, deep, slow, teasing her, tasting her. Claiming her, until every nerve-ending in her body flared to life. She kissed him back. Unexpectedly, he pulled away.

“You sure you don’t want me to go?”

“What?” He had to repeat the question before she could make sense of the words. “No. Don’t go.”

“You sure?”

“I’m sure.”

He pushed her back into the mattress, settling on his side beside her. Madelynn started to push the sheet aside, but Sloan covered her hand with his, stilling her. “Leave it.”

“But—”

“I have a plan.” He skimmed one hand up and down her bare arm, from wrist to shoulder and back again. Her skin prickled.

“Should I be worried?” she managed.

“Do you ever have a waking moment when you’re not worried about something?”

Good question. She tried to formulate an answer, but Sloan was trailing hot kisses down her neck, across her shoulder, pausing to flick his tongue into the hollow at the center of her collarbone, and Madelynn lost her train of thought. The scrape of stubble across her skin was nearly unbearable. A low noise rose in her throat as her hips shifted. He nibbled a path across her chest just above the edge of the sheet, then cupped one breast, caressing her through the thin cotton, circling his thumb over the peaked tip. The fabric barrier muted his touch. And yet, it felt unbearably naughty, almost more so than if she were naked.

He lowered his head and took one sensitized nipple in his mouth, suckling, grazing with the edge of his teeth. A low cry broke from her. Sloan continued kissing his way
